Rules for aiming with small arms

Shooting with small arms is a popular sport, active recreation, and a useful skill that requires discipline above all else. But in addition to concentration and compliance with safety precautions, it is important to learn the rules of aiming.

How to prepare and master the rules of aiming, what mistakes to avoid — you will find all the details in this article.

Preparing for aiming

In order to learn how to shoot a firearm, first of all you need to set a goal, choose a training location and prepare the necessary equipment:

  • a rifle,
  • ammunition,
  • training targets.

How to aim correctly — a step-by-step guide:

  1. Assume a correct, stable position for maximum control over the weapon and recoil, maintaining body balance. For example, the Isosceles stance or a stance with elbows resting on the knees. Depending on the distance, choose a stance that provides maximum stability and control.
  2. Align the sighting device, focusing on the sight rather than the target.
  3. Follow proper breathing technique: breathe evenly and smoothly to reduce trembling and ensure a smooth trigger pull.
  4. Smoothly press the trigger and fire on the exhale for stability. This rule reduces bullet spread and improves shooting accuracy.

We recommend starting training with affordable pneumatic rifle models and taking care of proper optics settings in advance. This step is especially important when it comes to shooting from a long distance.

The main criterion when choosing a training location is the ability to shoot air guns. A safe and comfortable place is a shooting club Darwin Club. But places where there are no people are also suitable. For example, a ravine in the forest or a large basement.

Before starting training, check the trigger — it is important that it does not slip and is not too light or heavy. If you do not have the opportunity to purchase a rifle yet, special training models will be available to you at the shooting club.

Optics settings check algorithm:

  1. Pay attention to the quality of the mount: the rings must precisely match the diameter of the scope tube with the appropriate height for comfortable alignment.
  2. The distance between the eye and the lens must be correct: after attaching the scope, make sure that aiming is comfortable and there is no need to shift it forward or backward.
  3. Crosshair position: before finally tightening the screws, check whether the crosshair is in the correct position. This directly affects the trajectory and range of the bullet.

And finally, take a closer look: the reticle of the collimator sight should be in a vertical position, and the sight should be at the correct distance from the eye. If the preparation was done correctly, learning to aim and make accurate shots will be much easier.

Aiming technique

The technique of aiming and shooting a firearm consists of three sequential stages: the shooter assumes a comfortable position, aims, and fires.

When aiming with pneumatic rifles, unlike a pistol, it is important that the stock rests against the right or left hand (depending on which hand is your dominant one). The aiming line should be straight, and the rifle should be held with both hands.

Both aiming and shooting should be done in a calm state, without haste. You must be completely focused on the target. Shooting club coaches advise breathing as evenly and shallowly as possible at this moment. In addition, to avoid an accidental shot, it is better to keep your hands on the grip while aiming.

Useful recommendation: when training to shoot among professionals, observe how they behave, how they aim, and adopt their useful techniques.

How to aim in 60 seconds:

  1. Stand correctly. Maintain a proper stance, try to hold the weapon firmly but without excessive tension.
  2. Align your eyes with the sight. Your gaze should be straight, the sighting devices clearly aligned.
  3. Focus on the front sight. Do not get distracted by the target, concentrate entirely on the sight.
  4. Breathe evenly and calmly. At the moment of the shot, hold your breath to eliminate involuntary weapon movement.
  5. Smoothly press the trigger. A smooth press will prevent weapon displacement during the shot.

This step-by-step guide will help you achieve high accuracy even in stressful situations, when every movement matters.

Tips for improving accuracy

In addition to the fundamentals — proper stance, grip, smooth trigger pull, breathing control and aiming — professionals recommend:

  • Practice dry firing, that is, train at home with an unloaded weapon (or with a laser trainer) to develop an automatic grip and trigger pull.
  • Improve weapon accuracy by using test shooting. Based on the sighting results, make the necessary adjustments to the sighting device. The main goal of preparing a firearm for accurate shooting is matching the target with the aiming point, regardless of conditions and distance.
  • Practice regularly at different distances, which will help develop so-called muscle memory.
  • Prepare psychologically, develop your concentration, avoid haste and fuss, and any unnecessary emotions during shooting training.

Advice from experienced coach Alexander M.:

"Never try to fire a shot quickly. Every movement should be controlled and calm. If you are not sure about the accuracy — pause and repeat the process."

  • Use special relaxation techniques that allow you to bring your pulse rate close to normal values, as if you were in a calm state. How successful and effective the shooting will be depends on how composed the shooter is.

Advice from shooting instructor Sergey K.:

"When you are aiming, remember: calmness is the key. If you are nervous, your hands will tremble and accuracy will drop sharply."

  • Check the condition of the rifle. It is important to regularly clean the weapon, as the accuracy of aiming will depend on how well-maintained and ready for use it is.

Typical aiming mistakes

In practice, the most common aiming mistakes are:

Mistake
What happens
How to fix
Incorrect stance and weapon grip
Significantly affects accuracy, increases recoil, can make shooting uncomfortable and even painful.
Learn to assume a correct, stable position. Hold the weapon confidently but not too rigidly — you must maintain control over it and try to minimize recoil from the shot. Practice different stances (e.g., Isosceles, Weaver) to find the most comfortable and stable one.
Incorrect aiming
Bullets miss the target. Shooting accuracy drops significantly.
Focus on the sighting devices, making them as sharp as possible, while the target should be slightly blurred. Follow the aiming rules: align the front sight and rear sight, then aim at the target.
Incorrect trigger pull
The weapon shifts at the moment of the shot, leading to loss of accuracy.
Practice even and smooth trigger pressing. Use dry firing (without a cartridge) to develop technique. The finger movement should be strictly backward, without shifting the weapon to the side.
Failure to follow safety rules
Can lead to negative consequences, including injuries, accidents, and property damage.
Always treat the weapon as if it is loaded. Check the chamber before and after shooting. Never keep your finger on the trigger until you are ready to fire. Never point the barrel at people or objects that are not targets, even if you are sure the weapon is not loaded. Store weapons and ammunition separately and in a place inaccessible to unauthorized persons.
Incorrect breathing
Weapon oscillation throws off aim, leading to inaccurate shooting.
Learn to breathe evenly and in a controlled manner. It is better to fire during the natural pause after exhaling — at this moment the body is maximally relaxed and stable. Practice breathing exercises for control and stabilization.

And most importantly: do not be nervous or afraid of shooting, as this will ultimately negatively affect the result. A mentally tense person will not be able to aim well, as their hands will tremble and their ability to concentrate will decrease. Get used to the weapon gradually — this helps overcome fear and indecisiveness. Training with experienced instructors in a safe and comfortable environment will also help.
